Macchiato

Macchiato

Some people describe the Macchiato as a man's drink, consisting of an espresso with just a touch of foam. However, there's a modern variation where milk is poured over the espresso, resembling a small latte.
In Europe, there's often confusion between an espresso macchiato and a latte macchiato.
We'll prepare one cup in the modern style with milk and the second in the traditional style with a dollop of foam in the center.
To make things easier, we'll split the espresso shot into two different cups. So, we'll prepare two single shots in separate espresso cups, but the recipe remains the same: 22 grams of coffee yielding 40 milliliters of espresso, which will be divided into two 20-milliliter shots.
Preparation Steps:
  1. 1
Split the Shots: Place two espresso cups on the scale and make the espresso shots, ensuring each cup has a single shot of espresso.
  2. 2
Modern Macchiato: Steam the milk and remove the foam. Pour this milk into the espresso cup, creating a smooth, creamy macchiato with a latte-like texture.
  3. 3
Traditional Macchiato: For the second cup, steam just enough milk to create foam. Stir the espresso and milk well, ensuring the crema is even. Use a spoon to scoop a dollop of foam and drop it into the center of the espresso.
Now you have two macchiatos: one prepared in the modern style with milk, and the other in the original style with a dollop of foam in the center.
